Britney vs J. Lo

I was just curious why there's a backlash brewing against Britney Spears while Jennifer Lopez hasn't been affected. If you look objectively, Lopez's music has just as much, if not more, studio work than Britney's. I think Britney has a better voice too.

I'm thinking it's because Lopez started as an actress and is older and doesn't look like as much of an upstart. Also, people expect and are used to more heavily produced dance music.

Heh, Britney's music is all cookie-cutter, standard-issue pop songs that are all the same, except for a slightly different beat and different words. She really needs some better writers if she wants to be more than just a hype-of-the-moment. Her first three songs off of her latest CD are almost exactly the same length and the "structure" of the songs is very similar.

And like you (Smackdaddy) said, J. Lo's has a lot of studio behind it too, but also like you said, that type of music is expected to be like that.

Neither of them have songs that have any lasting potential. I give my point to J. Lo, though, because while her music may not be spectacular, it's as good as Britney's and she can act pretty good.

This is all just my opinion, though. =]

A lot of Britney's songs sound similar, but some are pretty good and just don't get as much airplay. "Born to Make You Happy" is a reasonably original song and "What You See Is What You Get" is catchy while sounding a little different than the "Baby One More Time/ Ooops I Did it Again" style. The record companies seem to peddle and focus on singles that sound similar cause they fit into a formula that sells well. They've been selling millions so obviously it's working. It sorta forces artists into conformity for the sake of safe big profits.

I also find Lopez to be more attractive than Spears.

In terms of music, you have to keep in mind that all those pop songs are written by guys in suits sitting at desks. They are named Bob, Harry and Peter and they come into the office at 9am and leave at 5pm. Then they hand the lyrics off to some sound mixing people that figure out how to digitally alter the singers' voices to fit the song.

If you look at the credits for a Lopez or Spears album, you'll see a "Producer," "Engineer," and "Arranger" for every song on the disc. Lopez is credited on a few songs, but I question the actual amount of involvement. ;)

ps- Am I the only one that likes Lopez' new nickname, "J.Lo?" It one of the few things that wasn't manufactured by our friends, Bob, Harry and Peter, but rather adopted from fans.

No, those songs are not written by guys in suits, they're written by a couple of swedish guys (I am actually not kidding here) who write a significant amount of material for the backstreet boys and for Nsuck as well. They don't just hand lyrics, they hand over fully finished songs (chord progressions and all) to britney's band (all very accomplished studio musicians. Technically proficient but inspirationally lacking). The band nails their shit in one take (saves on studio time and thus money to use guys who do that) and go home. Then britney does around 20-30 takes and they use digital editing to cut and paste together 1 perfect take. Her voice isn't "altered" as some like to put it but she certainly isn't as strong a singer as she comes off to be. Lopez's backing is in the form of an ace producer in NY who's only like 19 years old. He writes for her and arranges all the beats and midi shit and does the same cut&paste type edits for her 20-30 takes. Neither one has any "originality" in that they sing and dance as the visual aspect of generic dancepop/hiphop tunes that are the work of other people. These people are VERY good at what they do however. They may be making music that sucks, but they are making TONS of money. Neither britney nor lopez are artists to speak of and to be able to dance and sing like they do on the album at the same time is damn near impossible (even for really good singers. You'd have to have an olympic class physique) So you usually hear them singing to a backing vocal track on a dat (that the band has to stay with a tape also shows further how capable their musicians are). These girls live, in studio or in video are being packaged by some incredibly skilled people and the productions are huge. They are simply the visual aspect necessary to sell records to hormone crazed teenagers who want to fuck them or be them. I'd have to say britney is a lot hotter tho. and i'm getting REALLY sick and tired of lopez mania. They're both marginally talented. And lopez is in love with herself to a discomforting degree.

2) Britney is younger and hotter than J.Lo and women are notoriously jealous of younger, hotter women.
3) Overpromotion. She's everywhere!

Now Christina is thinner than Britney (which doesn't make Christina more attractive IMO) so you'd think she'd be an even bigger target for girls tired of the thin is beautiful image. But she's largely tolerated. I attribute this to the fact that she's not as hot, she's not dating Justin, and she's not as overpromoted.

Mariah Carey can sing and she used to know how to keep the stupid octave straddling crap down to a respectable amount (lately Mariah has lost that. a fallen angel...). Christina still belts it out too loud sometimes. Her voice is nice, but she definitely has no career guarantees.

I think everyone's forgetting Ella Fitzgerald. Sure, she's dead, and she was never hot, but she could sing.

As for hot vocalists? I'm all about Britney. She seems to be getting sluttier over time. J-Lo's cornrows knocked her down another notch in my book.

The basic difference between Britney and J-Lo is their image. First off, J-Lo is marketing herself as ghetto. She has been hanging around P Diddy, was involved in a shooting at a night club, and she wants that thugged out image that Tupac and Eazy E have.

Britney on the other hand is marketing herself as a trashy, whitebread, innercity hoe.

This tells me two things:

1) Woman want to be ghetto.

2) Woman do not like Britney. Their basic sentiment towards her is stated perfectly by the guy in the movie Way Of The Gun: "You better shut that cunt up, or I'll fuckstart her head."

It seems like ages since the era of Smackdaddy. Things seems so different now...

Anyway, here's what I have to add in Smackdaddy's memory:

J.Lo is VERY hot with the right photographer. Anyone remember her fly girl days from In Living Color? Ewwww! She was a nasty ho then. I know all women benefit from a great photographer/make-up artist, but J.Lo especially so.

I think I'll mention Lynda Lopez again. If you've never seen her, she's an anchor on some news program and used to be a DJ for WKTU in NYC. I also met her in person at a club. J.Lo can look a little bit trashy, but Lynda is very hot and always looks classy. I don't know if she's older, but her personality is definitely more mature (at least in comparison to what I can tell of J.Lo's without having met her).

Christina can be very sexy. I know she has it in her. But she insists on making herself ugly sometimes. Also, Christina, I give you permission to eat some more. You are NOT fat and could fill out a little bit.

Now Britney... Believe it or not, I don't even know what she's being doing lately. The last thing I remember was the Pepsi commercial. That was a brilliant display complete with phallic symbol pepsi bottles (guess who's the only one mouthing the bottle?) and sparks shooting from the pepsi bottle at the end (hmm... what could THAT be?). Oh yes, there was also that tabloid clipping. I'm going to be objective now. I think Britney without make-up is a good looking girl, but not outstanding. What adds to her appeal (other than the million dollar make-up/costume team) is just how she carries herself and her personality.

If you look at a lot of girls that started as runway models, you'll see that not all of them are that attractive judging purely on looks. What they do have is an imposing presence. They have this way about them that shouts "Look at me!". There's no better example than Giselle Bundchen. She's got a defiant look in her eye that just screams for attention. I personally think Laeticia is world's hotter, but her way of carrying herself just doesn't compare and on the runway presentation is perhaps even more important than raw beauty.
