I'm sitting here avoiding a take home essay from hell... and watching vh1's top 100 rock songs.

Does anyone have an opinion on this? I am going with Dazed and Confused by Led Zeppelin.
Some close seconds, Aqualung by Jethro Tull, Tangled Up in Blue by Dylan, (This is the)End by the Doors and White Room by Cream.

Led Zepellin has a ton of good ones. One of my favorites is "The Ocean". ACDC - Back in Black is also killer.

Stairway to Heaven, no question. A close second would be Hey You, by Pink Floyd, and Riders on the Storm, by the Doors.

Voo Doo Chile (slight return). It is not a rock song, it is the rock song.

I could start listing some great U2 songs, but I'm sure many of you would argue that they aren't really, truly "rock" songs.

"Purple Haze" by Jimi Hendrix... "The Hurricane" by Bob Dylan... "Time" by Pink Floyd... "Houses of the Holy" by Led Zeppelin.

This Richard Thompson wouldn't by any chance be related to you would he?

Yes, all Thompsons are related.

Damn, what's wrong with Classic Rock and people who listen to it? There's a wide variety of Classic Rock.

Well, like there's a lot of good classic rock, primarily Zappa, Captain Beefheart, The Who, et cetera, but I tend to think liking Pink Floyd, most Zeppelin, and the Doors, is like liking Dave Matthews Band.

Don't make me go there.

Well Zeppelin and the Beatles were so prolific, you can't really say all of their stuff is good or bad. Some Beatles songs are truly beautiful. Then there's "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" which I put right up there with any bubble gum pop hit you hear today from Mandy Moore...

I've never been thoroughly impressed with th Beatles work. I'd have to say that they were perhaps the most prolific artists of decent stuff in history though. I'm not a big fan.

As for Zepp, it's really just a band to listen to if you're a teenager, like to sit in a truck, drink alcohol, and enjoy stupid fantasy references to Tolkien. Not that I find anything wrong with that, but that's not my particular forté.

Zeppelin had some cool stuff, and when I was a surly teenager reading Tolkein, it was pretty cool that there were rockin songs about the books I was reading. However it must be stated that classic rock is stupid. VERY stupid. Richard Thompson is a singer songwriter who was in the seminal folkie band Fairport Convention. He's good, and being americans we've never heard of him because we're so used to having drivel force-fed to us. We're at this horrible place musically where if its not from the canon of classic rock and its not on MTV it can't be good. There are tons of great indie bands making good rock these days. To those of you who like beer and shit, go buy Guided By Voices new album "Isolation Drills" Better than retreading classic rock ground and not limp bisquick pussy rock.

Slade's "Run run away" has one of the best hooks ever. Rush (the band) is pretty good, too. Pretentious, maybe, but you haven't lived until you've heard a drum solo by Neil Peart in concert.
