An artist, a song, a group of musicians, a producer, and a studio. The tape rolls, and everyone leaves well pleased. But then something happens, and the song doesn’t quite fit the project. These are fourteen songs, recorded between 1973 and 1983, that didn’t quite fit at the time. For many years, they were stored in the basement of Audie Ashworth’s house in Nashville. Ashworth was J. J. Cale’s producer and music publisher, and the basement was Crazy Mama’s Studio, known to those who examine the back of LP covers as the site of some of Cale’s finest recordings. In common with all of Cale’s recordings, these were painstakingly crafted with a profound understanding of how recordings are made. His touch of genius was to apply technology and craftsmanship to the point that they became invisible. Anyone can be clever; simplicity is tough.

Radiohead, the internationally renowned band, has taken the unusual step of telling fans that they can pay as much or as little as they like for the band's new album In Rainbows.

In a break from industry tradition the UK band famous for hits including Creep, Paranoid Android and Karma Police, has told fans "it's up to you" what they pay to digitally download the album.

This isn't the first time that an artist has opted to charge nothing for its album, but the move is significant because Radiohead remains one of the biggest bands in the world.

Radiohead is free to sell its album directly from its official website because it is no longer tied to a record label. So far the album is only available to pre-order from the website, where it can be downloaded on release on October 10.

In return, you add yourselves to their mailing list, something that could create extra value for the band later on.

Those who still choose to use a filesharing network are simply saving the band the effort of trying to forge a deeper connection. Meanwhile the music spreads anyway.

The album is available on October 10. The boxed set comes in early December. Freed from the machinery of a label, Radiohead can move quickly (though, to be fair, who knows how long they've been planning this). This removes the risk of one of the big problems the internet brings to bands: album leaks.

This was an album Mal did upon returning from a European tour with Billy Holiday and right before emigrating to Europe.

The album is a trio date and while in no way watered down, is more accessible than some of his later works. The fidelity of the album is very good with no remastering and only the original liner notes reproduced. Throughout the album the trio plays with great sympathy. On hearing this, one does not play the game of wishing “so and so” was behind the drums instead.

The album is made up of originals and some standards made their own by the trio. Center to the album is what Mal called his “Overseas Suite”(“Champs Elysees”/”Ciao”/”C’est Formidable”) which is a three sectioned suite for the trio built upon his impressions of Paris. My one bone of contention on this album is the suite is broken up by other non-suite tracks.

However, the non suite tracks are just as good. One of my favorite moments on the album is actually one of the non-suite tracks “All About Us”. The song was actually written by Mal’s wife Elaine. It is very reminiscent of the music written by Italian film director Federico Fellini’s scorer of choice Nino Rota, minus some of the saccharine touches he sometimes injects. The brushed drums and bass dance a happy waltz to the melody presented by a piano.

From the start of his solo career, Mal never settled for constructing songs as a vehicle for his solos. A song routed in the hard-bop style does not often stay there. The last part of the Overseas suite “C’est Formidable” best illustrates this. The song starts off with slow dark chords which float alone until gaining speed with percussive kisses which signal the rest of the trios entrance into the piece. Also witness in this piece how, like few other pianist at this time, Mal was able to effortlessly change the cadence of his piano with in one piece.

Initially conceived during a rehearsal for a U.K television special with Billy “All the Way” starts with a slinking piano figure, which as the piece progresses is replaced by a more vocal voicing. It is one of the few songs from the great American song book in which the absence of one of the many vocalists who have covered it is not noticeable. The same piano figure which had started the song reenters to end it, reminding us that all we need is indeed, already right here.

EN, Pearl Jam's debut album, was released less than a month before Nirvana's NEVERMIND, and although it took longer to climb the pop charts it also hung around longer, eventually outselling its Seattle rival. Together, the two albums reinvigorated rock and roll, whose share of the pop marketplace had been slipping through the late 1980s. But while Nirvana's bruising punk rock was an all-out assault on the classic-rock dinosaur, Pearl Jam's accomplished hard rock was an attack from within the system.

The drawn-out, bluesy guitar riffing and anthemic choruses that dominated TEN instantly gave away roots in the same popular hard rock and heavy metal that Nirvana was intent on crushing. Indeed, before forming Pearl Jam, guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament (who between them wrote most of the music on TEN) were the core of two '70s-influenced metal bands, Green River and Mother Love Bone. But in place of the self-aggrandizing, larger-than-life singers that led most such bands, Gossard and Ament found Eddie Vedder, a ravage-voiced vocalist more apt to identify with the abused and misunderstood children he was singing about than with any other rock stars. I had heard about the DR. Ebbetts versions for a while now, but until recently hadn't actually found any to check out... well I did & am really impressed with the 2 I found so thought I would share & hope you like the vinyl sound & feel as much as I do..

A note about the good Dr. Ebbets

To all those who think these are commercial releases or waiting for the official CD releases.
Dr. Ebbets was/is one of the biggest Beatles collectors. He purchased all of the original Capitol/Parlophone & US/UK (and some Mexican & German) LP's back in the 60's. He did not open them until 2000 when he decided to rip all of them on his pristine stereo equipment. Much better than the infamous Millennium Remasters.
Secondly, the sound quality is many times better than the cd issues by Capitol in the mid 80's, as those used 2nd or 3rd generation master tapes, where-as the original vinyl issues were from the original master tapes at the time that the vinyl was made from. The other exception to this rule are the MFSL remasters which were done by Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs which in the late 70s and 80s they got a hold of the original masters from their most popular UK albums and remastered them using the highest fidelity possible onto 180 gram limited-edition virgin vinyl that was very very expensive (roughly about $40 - $80 a title in US funds at the release date) and MFSL has yet to release their Beatles remasters on cd as well, but again the good Dr. had unopened, unplayed copies of these as well (don’t confuse the Dr. Ebbetts MFSL's with just the regular MFSL rips kicking around, those are inferior). So essentially all of these are NOT commercially available in this form. The fidelity is much better, the packaging was made to replicate the original 60's vinyl.
As any Beatle collector knows, these titles are essentially THE holy grail for Beatles fans.

These are transferred from the vinyl releases. Only the smallest amount of noise reduction necessary has been applied. An excellent sounding recording, when compared to the actual Mobile Fidelity releases. Very clear, crisp stereo.

Guy returned in 2001 with Sweet Tea, an utter anomaly in his catalog. Recorded at the studio of the same name in deep Mississippi, this is a bold attempt to make a raw, pure blues album -- little reliance on familiar covers or bands, no crossover material, lots of extended jamming and spare production. That's not to say that it's without its gimmicks. In a sense, the very idea behind this record is a little gimmicky -- let's get Buddy back to the basics -- even if it's a welcome one, but that's not the problem. The problem is that the production is a bit too self-conscious in its stylized authenticity. There's too much separation, too much echo, a strangely hollow center -- it may sound rougher than nearly all contemporary blues albums, but it doesn't sound gritty, which it should. Buddy Guy's catalog because, even with its affected production, it basically works. Playing in such an unrestricted setting loosens Buddy up, not just letting him burn on guitar, but allows him to act his age without embarrassment (check the chilling acoustic opener, "Done Got Old").
