I used the following Procedure to refresh the Download dates for all my files


1: Start Flashget, go to Options, Connections and set simultaneous Downloads to 1

2: Go here for all your files

A Hundred Miles or More carries the subtitle A Collection, and what a curious collection it is--cuts from soundtracks, side projects, and tribute albums, plus guest duets on other artists' albums and five previously unreleased tracks. In other words, this is a collection of Alison Krauss performances that have never appeared on an Alison Krauss album, though it holds together better than such a grab-bag approach might suggest. Highlights such as her duet with Brad Paisley on "Whiskey Lullaby" and her a cappella rendition of "Down to the River to Pray" from O Brother, Where Art Thou? will be familiar to most Krauss fans, though it's doubtful that many share her infatuation with retro rocker John Waite (with whom she revives his "Missing You" and duets on a cover of Don Williams's "Lay Down Beside Me."). Other projects represented range from Disney to the Chieftains to the Louvin Brothers (she duets with James Taylor on their "How's the World Treating You." There's minimal contribution from her Union Station band--making this a solo release by default--and little information to indicate whether the previously unreleased tracks were outtakes from earlier releases or recently recorded for this one.

A Love Supreme was recorded one December evening in Rudy Van Gelder's legendary studio in Englewood Cliffs, N.J. Pianist McCoy Tyner remembers the unusual, almost magical atmosphere surrounding the session. "Rudy that day dimmed the lights in his studio. I'd never seen him do that and it sort of set an atmosphere. There was just something very, very special about that particular session."

Drummer Elvin Jones says Coltrane "never wrote out any music for us. When he played we more or less had to imagine, or feel, how to interpret the song. And it got to the point where I felt I was almost part of his mind, almost telepathic in a way."

The quartet, which also included bassist Jimmy Garrison, needed little more than the seed of a melodic idea when it hit the studio. Tyner adds: "We had been playing some of that music and we didn't know what it was going to be until we got into the studio. And then it all came together."

Coltrane constructed the suite's main theme around a simple four-note pattern — based on the words "a love supreme."

But A Love Supreme is more than just a musical statement, Kahn says. "It's an unusually complete vision of one man's spirituality expressed through his art. Coltrane used the tools he had available and that he knew: a saxophone, a well-practiced quartet — even his own voice — to create music worthy of his creator."

In a 1966 interview, Coltrane discussed religion and spirituality.

"I've always felt that even though a man was not a Christian, he still has to know the truth some way or another. Or if he was a Christian, he could know the truth." he said. "The truth itself doesn't have any name on it to me. And each man has to find this for himself, I think."

Kahn says the influence of A Love Supreme can't just be measured by the sales charts.

"The truest gauge of this album's effect is in the intensity with which people speak of A Love Supreme and how they pass it on from one person to another — like a cherished, holy object. And in a way it is." - Ashley Kahn

Cray delivers a strong punch with "Shame and a Sin," one of his best efforts. The songs are authentic, straight-ahead gems, and varied bill of fare offers Cray a chance to show off his considerable guitar-playing and vocal prowess.

One of the best things about Cray's playing for me is his mastery of material in minor keys. "Some Pain Some Shame" shows this off, as well as his lyrical guitar.

Best of all for me, however, is Cray's voice, which is the most compelling of all the younger blues players. It's a powerful voice, but it communicates tenderness and heartache with the convincing strength that the great soul singers had. To sample that power, try "I Shiver," "Don't Break This Ring," or best of all, "Passing By," a great slow blues that for me is one of the highlights of the CD.

Not that Cray disregards big, uptempo blues. His tax time lament, "1040 Blues," and the stinging "You're Gonna Need Me" prove that.

If you don't have any Cray, this is a great first addition to your collection. If you have others but not this one, don't delay in adding it.

Charles Mingus, Mingus Ah um

The first track says it all: "Better get it into Your Soul." This is soul-stirring, head-thumping, body-shaking stuff. Insistent, penetrating, simply inspired. Hard to compare it to anything, really, although it has elements of bebop, blues, gospel, and that crazy no-holds-barred spirit of funk. One of my top ten jazz cuts.

The famous "Goodbye Porkpie Hat," a tribute to Lester Young, is a quieter blues-based piece, centered around soulfully played sax. Emotionally, it's both sad and affectionate. "Boogie Stop Shuffle" sounds like the soundtrack to some weird 60's spy movie --with Mingus, expect the unexpected! Excellent piano by Horace L. Parlan, Jr. driven along by the lionesque Mingus on bass. Self-portrait in "Three Colors" and "Open Letter to Duke" feature brilliant Ellingtonian arrangements and warm colors. The latter piece has superb boppish sax-riffs, settles into a richly colored niche, and then breaks into some rhythmic and melodic audacity.

Mingus' brilliant, daring "Fables of Faubus" retains its mocking tone, but is less political than the vocal version on the magnificent "Live at Antibes." It's an interesting contrast to his bold (courageous, even) attack on Governor Faubus in the live version, and, again, shows Ellington's influence in its beautifully complex arrangement. "Pussy Cat Dues" and "Jelly Roll" deliver a New Orleans laid-back sound. On `Dues,' Mingus lays down some languid, monumental bass effects. It's thick luxurious sleaze, sliced through with the purity and strength of the sax.

One of the best of the studio albums, although, frankly, I like them all. An innovator, an explorer, a trailblazer, he is truly a genius. You'll find more and more to appreciate with every listening. Most highly recommended to the Mingus fan as well as the most hesitant newcomer

You know, I wish this download thingy wasn't so damn difficult. So I'm trying to get that last Stevie Ray thing that Joe put on here, and I download the first one just fine. Only winrar says I need to buy something from them. (because "it's not free") Then when I think I've figured that out and try to extract it, it says I need the next part. So I go back to get that one; only the download site says I've exceeded my quota for the free download and I need to wait 35 minutes to continue. What a steamy pile of feces. My computer is littered with half-downloaded, half finished, partially taken-care-of garbage. Just once I would like the promise of technology to be at least halfway realized in my life. Nothing EVER works like it should, nor will it ever. And yet I hold out the vain hope that somehow, some way the next time it will. THAT'S what makes me look like an idiot

Binary time, the foundation of rock and roll, is a term that works better and is in more current usage, in French—binaire. Jazz is based on a more complex and fluid subdivided three feeling called ternary (ternaire). Most Western music said to "swing" has at least an implied backbeat—Philly Joe Jones streamlined ternary drumming with a fourth-beat click on the rim of the snare drum behind Miles Davis.

During his rock star period, roughly the last 20 years of his life, Davis did not allow his drummers to play ternary. Except for ballads, the backbeat was usually on top of the beat and in your ears; much more than implied. Taken together with what could be a merciless wah-wah pedal, it turned a lot of serious people off. Now, however, fans allergic to backbeats and electronic effects will be able to hear how, paraphrasing Mark Twain about Richard Wagner, this music is not as bad as it sounds. Thanks to a new glossy 20-CD box The Complete Miles Davis at Montreux 1973 - 1991 (Montreux Sounds), Miles's rich and relatively undocumented electric period can be heard live at length.

Davis was not at the time, as is sometimes held, in decline. Although his playing was not as fast or virile, the choice of material and notes and his casting remained choice. The period known as "Electric Miles" was an influential language—witness current successful young European groups led by Eric Truffaz and Nils Petter

Taste aside, the ternary rhythm team of Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb was no better or worse accompanying him than the binary bassist Darryl Jones and Al Foster on drums—just very different. Most people who cite Duke Ellington's oft-quoted statement that there are only two kinds of music, good and bad, don't really believe it. One perception of "swing" is as "the passing of good time" and there is more than one way to do that. There is no such thing as a bad groove, it either is or it isn't. Elvin Jones once said: "Music should be judged on its own terms."

Miles's versions of "If I were A Bell (I'd Be Ringing") or "Gone, Gone, Gone" are neither more nor less valid than Cindi Lauper's "Time After Time," Prince's "Movie Star" or the Michael Jackson vehicle "Human Nature." They were all pop songs to which he gave a new spin, elaborated on, made his own. His wispy anthem "Jean-Pierre" is a rock nursery rhyme. Marcus Miller's "Tutu" deserves to be a standard on its own. Each song stands by itself in one or another of his languages.

Although it may not have been conscious, one reason Miles was attracted to a heavy backbeat late in life was that he had grown tired of creating his own grooves. This way he could continue to be contemporary while using his head more than his increasingly weaker body and make more money at the same time. Having others lean on his good, complex, ternary time for all those years took a lot of creativity, courage and energy. By 1973, he was closing in on 50 and had earned the right to lean on the grooves of others. Let the kids do the work. He followed in the lee of his energetic young musicians like a bicycle racer in a slipstream. They provided him with the force he needed to continue to be the "Prince of Silence." Folklore has it that he'd stop them practicing in their dressing rooms and tell them to "practice on stage."

While many jazz fans detested that consistent insistent backbeat, rock critics did not concern themselves with electric Miles because there were no vocals and, besides, anybody can hear that it's jazz. It was between the cracks, fiery, intensely minimal and overlooked. (For influences, think Jimi Hendrix, Sly And the Family Stone, Cream and Ellington.) The "Electric Miles" period got notably more musical and together in the early 1980s, after his mid-life "creative break"—and after he toned down the wah-wahs.

The 1984-85 band (four CDs) with Jones and Foster, John Scofield on guitar and the tenorman Bob Berg deserves a special mention. The 1986 formation (two CDs) with blues guitarist Robben Ford and the keyboard/synthesizer team of Adam Holzman and Robert Irving III (and guest David Sanborn) was a killer. So were post-1988 bands with saxophonists Rick Margitza or Kenny Garrett (seven CDs). Some nights were better than others, but none were truly bad, and the sound is always first-rate.

CD 19 (the only one previously released), the much-touted looking-back concert on July 8th, 1991, with Quincy Jones conducting the George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band covering Davis's greatest acoustic ternary hits such as "Boplicity" and "Blues For Pablo" is a bit sad—an historical curiosity at best. CD 20, recorded in Nice (the only non-Montreux concert) nine days later, ten weeks before his died, is evidence that Miles could be scorching and soulful until the end.

does anyone know if the b-side to the Cure's Standing on a Beach was ever released on cd? the cassette had all of these great b-sides but the cd (retitled Staring at the Sea) only seems to be the a-sides.

Now I'm not going to sit here and pretend to be a jazz afficionado, but man is she a great musician and quite good at expressing herself, viscerally, musically and verbally. i liken them to a cross between post-grunge my bloody valentine/cult influenced music with obscured by clouds era pink floyd style vocals. they opened for the dandy warhols a couple of weeks ago, and i was so impressed with their show that i bought both of their albums on the spot. they are the first new band i've bought music from in longer than i care to mention.

so that said, i got home and found out my copy of Dig, Lazarus, Dig! is fucked up. and now i am a sad girl:bawling:. does anybody have this that they can upload for me? i want to hear it and i can't wait to buy it again! :beg:
