Many thanks. I am going to have to look through my music collection to see if I have anything that any of you here would like. I am bound to have something decent, I just rarely listen to CDs anymore. Between Pandora and the one and only radio station I care to listen to, my CDs end up getting ignored a lot.

King with the spikiness of Hubert Sumlin and the crying tone of Elmore James with his usual synapse-frying intensity, Hendrix manages to both honour the music tradition while remaining uniquely himself.

John Lee Hooker - It Serves You Right to Suffer

A number of John Lee Hooker CDs have been released over the years, many of them somewhat shoddy compilations of rather dubious-sounding live shows and unlabeled re-recordings of vintage material. This makes the reissue of a classic John Lee Hooker album like 1966's smoking IT SERVES YOU RIGHT TO SUFFER all the more appreciated.

Backed by the sympathetic quartet of guitarist Barry Galbraith, legendary bassist Milt Hinton, drummer David Panama Francis, and trombonist William Wells--whose interjections give the bluesy tunes an unexpected but surprisingly effective '20s jazz feel--Hooker's boogie-style slide guitar sounds right at home. This is possibly the best full-band recording of Hooker's long career, and one of interest even to those who prefer his solo guitar-and-voice records. Highlights include the incendiary title track and the rollicking "Shake It Baby". Though the playing time is a bit short, this is still a richly satisfying listening experience.

Though I'm a bit older, and I'm not sure if most of you will remember, but it’s hard to recall a more dominating figure of ’80s pop mythology than the three-headed power animal that beamed down into deserts and strip malls, bringing forth miniskirted muses, righting injustices and sending underdogs off to seek their dreams.

Merging gritty torqued-up sounds to Middle American morality tales, these videos turned the double-Z lightning-bolt key chain into a Jungian archetype, one that would reemerge in Pulp Fiction as the key Bruce Willis held to his vanquished foe’s motorcycle—a decade later, still a gleaming talisman of freedom.

Although they’d made seven albums in blues rock, ZZ Top had been steadily refining their own spare, punchy, pop-oriented version. After using synths on ’81’s El Loco, the band blended them with sequencers and Gibbons’s signature “amp cabin” style of guitar mic’ing to create a dance-beat-driven juggernaut in Eliminator. Black Flag were soon playing Eliminator before shows on their ’84 tour; singer Henry Rollins now declares in these liner notes, “The change of direction on Eliminator was one of the boldest and most successful moves a rock band ever made.”

Their video retrofit may have been state of the art, but the wry, folksy spirit that inspired it was as old as John Lee Hooker. And, remastered for its 25th anniversary, this strange, computer-assisted beast still has a palpable warmth at its center—nowhere more so than in their first Top 10 hit, “Legs,” which, inside all that internal combustion, remains a strikingly tender love song. Even if they did write it about a car.

Kings of the endless boogie, the self-described “Little Ol’ Band From Texas” understands the power of simple hooks, visual and musical. Guitarist Billy Gibbons and bassist Dusty Hill sport flowing beards that suggest sagebrush rabbis (though drummer Frank Beard doesn’t, ironically), and they deck their greasy grooves with surreal humor and memorable images of fast cars and cheap sunglasses. The Top’s commercial and creative stars aligned in the early ’80s with the addition of New Wave electronics on “Sharp Dressed Man” and “Gimme All Your Lovin’. ” Reaching back to Gibbons’s dopey late-’60s psychedelic group Moving Sidewalks, this four-disc, 80-track extravaganza begs for trimming, starting with the Eagles-style ballads. But any band that still worships Howlin’ Wolf after scoring a 10-times-platinum album (1983’s Eliminator) deserves commemoration and respect.

Bon Scott's death (1980)

On February 19, 1980, Bon Scott passed out after a night of heavy drinking in London, and was left in a car owned by an acquaintance named Alistair Kinnear. The following morning, Kinnear rushed him to King's College Hospital in Camberwell, where Scott was pronounced dead on arrival. Although common folklore claims that pulmonary aspiration of vomit was the cause of Scott's death, the official cause was listed as "acute alcohol poisoning" and "death by misadventure".

Angus Young later recalled, "I remember Bon telling me the story of when he saw Brian (Johnson) singing." He says about that night, "There's this guy up there screaming at the top of his lungs and then the next thing you know he hits the deck. He's on the floor, rolling around and screaming. I thought it was great, and then to top it off—you couldn't get a better encore—they came in and wheeled the guy off!" Later that night, Johnson would be diagnosed with appendicitis, which was the cause of his writhing around on stage.

Catfish Hodge - Live At The Bayou

Catfish has been called an "American folk blues hero" and has been a mainstay on the American Blues music scene for three decades now! He has twenty four albums to his credit, comprised almost totally of original material. "Catfish Blues" and "Like A Big Dog Barkin’" on the Wildcat label, and "Eyewitness Blues" on Genes CD were released in 1994 and 1995. His first album of children’s songs "Adventures at Catfish Pond", on Music for Little People label was released in May of 1996. The album won the NAPA Golden Award as best children’s music of 1996. His 1998 release "Bare Necessities"(on Chicken Legs Music) finds him in a solo acoustic setting, with lowdown funky blues and soulful ballads. His 1999 release "Twenty Years" features performances from concerts and radio broadcast and includes the only version now available of "Boogie Man Gonna Git Ya", as well as other rare gems. His 2002 release "Let's Eat" is a best of collection of his best known food songs of which there are many! Both of his latest albums are available on Chicken Legs Music. All of his albums prior to the 1990's are hard to find except for the first Catfish Band album "Get Down", which Sony/Epic re-released in the mid 1990's, due to demand for it overseas.

Catfish found his calling early on. While growing up in Detroit, he was sneaking into Motown Records Hitsville studio to catch the Four tops and the Supremes and grooving to R&B and Blues while his contemporaries gravitated to the Beatles. In the late 1960’s he formed the Catfish Band and led them out of Detroit into national prominence.

By 1973 Catfish had settled into Washington, DC where he was packing them in at Desperado’s, Childe Harold and the Cellar Door with what the Washington City Paper describes as "his cheerfully muscular blues & rockin’ boogie". He made a few friends along the way too. He became a regular opener for Bonnie Raitt and Little Feat, who also started showing up on his recordings. When he formed the Chicken Legs Band in 1981, he was joined by Little Feat’s Paul Barrere, Richie Hayward, Kenny Gradney and Sam Clayton. Their final tour hit twenty one cities and sold out every one.

By 1982 Catfish had headed west to California where he lived for the next 17 years. Along with Paul Barrere he formed the Bluesbusters in 1984. They recorded two albums for Landslide Records and toured for many years, until Little Feat was reformed in the late 1980’s.

In 1999 Catfish founded the Hillbilly Funk Allstars with T Lavitz, Richie Hayward, Kenny Gradney, and Vassar Clements. Their first tour was well received, with great turn outs, will they ever tour again? He continues to work solo acoustic and with his new electric band in the mid-atlantic area, as well as festivals around the globe.

Today Catfish Hodge lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, where he says "the air is fresh and the mountains are good for the healing of the soul." After thirty five years on the road and twenty four albums having been released, he is still electrifying music fans with his powerful and spiritual style of original music!

An evening with Catfish is a raucous romp through life’s occurrences, punctuated with his unique insights and wit. While critics struggle to classify his sound, calling it “Delta jazz”, "Southern rock", or “rhythm and blues”, Catfish just keeps on keepin’ on, pleasing the crowd with his right-on songs and electrifying stage presence.

Muddy Waters - Electric Mud
(1997) DZ RIP @ 320

Electric Mud is the infamous "somebody-put-something-in-the-Waters" LP from 1968. A relative hit for Chess, it features the exalted bluesman bellowing over psychedelicised arrangements that owe more to Steppenwolf than Willie Dixon. Waters himself complained that the drums were too busy and the lead guitar sounded like a cat's meow. Not a bad critique.

This 1955 Hollywood nightclub recording finds pianist Oscar Peterson, guitarist Herb Ellis, and bassist Ray Brown in superbly relaxed form. Except for two Peterson originals, the double-disc program consists entirely of standards. The solos are more concise than on later Peterson albums, with no tune lasting more than about six and a half minutes. But what's truly remarkable here is how the three musicians lend rhythmic support to each other while at the same time carrying on a rapid-paced, melodic conversation. Not many bassists can walk and sing at the same time the way Brown does. No way a drummer could have helped this group swing any harder.

The group that Oscar Peterson led between 1953-58 with guitarist Herb Ellis and bassist Ray Brown was one of the great piano trios of all time. It was never so much a matter of Peterson having two other musicians accompany him as it was that they could meet the pianist as near-equals and consistently inspire him. And unlike most trios, Peterson's had many arranged sections that constantly needed rehearsals and were often quite dazzling. This live double-CD from 1955 has previously unreleased (and unknown) performances of 31 songs (28 standards plus three of Peterson's originals) that were released for the first time in 1994. The pianist is often in typically miraculous form, Ellis (whether playing harmonies, offering short solos or getting his guitar to sound like a conga by tapping it percussively) proves to be a perfect partner, and Brown's subtle but sometimes telepathic contributions should not be overlooked either.

I Discovered this lot late but, What a find. In the Best traditions of Quirky Rock, British Sea Power are reminiscent of bands like Spiritulized, The Chameleons and Arcade Fire. I absolutley Love this Record and listen to it at least twice a Day lately. Enjoy.

I did a search on here, and I did begin downloading the Live at Sin-e album, but I was wondering if anyone had any other highly recommended albums of his. I had a copy of 'Grace' and really loved it, but I can't find it anymore. I was also hoping someone might have other stuff of his that isn't as well-known but still worth it.

This album is the soundtrack to the documentary about Leonard Cohen's music, called Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man (2006) - it's all cohen's music performed by other artists.

for me, it was all about the nick cave (2 songs!) and jarvis cocker, but there's other stuff there for everyone - i guess assuming you like leonard cohen :)

Born in Crawford, Mississippi, Williams as a youth began wandering across the United States busking and playing stores, bars, alleys and work camps. In the early 1920s he worked in the Rabbit Foot Minstrels revue and recorded with the Birmingham Jug Band in 1930 for the Okeh label.

In 1934 he was in St. Louis, where he met record producer Lester Melrose who signed him to a contract with Bluebird Records in 1935. He stayed with Bluebird for ten years, recording such blues hits as "Baby, Please Don't Go" (1935) and "Crawlin' King Snake" (1941), both songs later covered by many other performers. He also recorded with other blues singers, including John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson, Robert Nighthawk and Peetie Wheatstraw.

Williams remained a noted blues artist in the 1950s and 1960s, with his guitar style and vocals becoming popular with folk-blues fans. He recorded for the Trumpet, Delmark, Prestige and Vocalion labels, among others. He became a regular on the concert and coffeehouse circuits, touring Europe and Japan in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and performing at major U.S. festivals.

Big Joe's guitar playing is decidedly in the Delta Blues style, and yet is unique. He played driving rhythm and virtuosic lead lines simultaneously and sang over it all. He played with picks both on his thumb and index finger, plus his guitar was very heavily modified. Williams added a rudimentary electric pick-up, whose wires coiled all over the top of his guitar. He also added three extra strings, creating unison pairs for the first, second and fourth strings. His guitar was usually tuned to Open G, like such: (D2 G2 D3D3 G3 B3B3 D4D4), with a capo placed on the second fret to set the tuning to the key of A. During the 1920s and 1930s, Big Joe had gradually added these extra strings in order to keep other guitar players from being able to play his guitar. In his later years, he would also occasionally use a 12-string guitar with all strings tuned in unison to Open G. It is little known that Big Joe sometimes tuned a six-string guitar to an interesting modification of Open G. In this modified tuning, the bass D string (D2) was replaced with a .08 gauge string and tuned to G4. The resulting tuning was (G4 G2 D3 G3 B3 D4), with the G4 string being used as a melody string by Big Joe. This tuning was used exclusively for slide playing. He was inducted into the W. C. Handy Blues Hall of Fame on October 4, 1992.

He died December 17, 1982 in Macon, Mississippi. Big Joe is buried in private cemetery outside Crawford near the Lowndes County line. His headstone was primarilly paid for by friends and partially funded by a collection taken up among musicians at Clifford Antone's night club in Austin, Texas, organized by California music writer Dan Forte, and erected through the Mt. Zion Memorial Fund on October 9, 1994. Harmonica virtuoso and one time touring companion of Williams Charlie Musselwhite delivered the eulogy at the unveiling. Williams' headstone epitaph, composed by Dan Forte, proclaims him "King of the 9 String Guitar".
