Some of these guys get caught up in their message a bit much. Rage Against the Machine comes to mind...
This all came to mind from a song (Ben Folds) - Rockin' the Suburbs. They just make fun of pop music, studio bands, and say "shamon!". You can't go wrong with shamon. Oh, and they parody the lead singer of Rage pretty convincingly.

The music video is rather comical.
Zack de la Rocha sounds too much like Adam Sandler trying to impersonate Beavis after one too many cups of coffee... :)

eh, its ok to be passionate about ur music, but not too damn serious i agree
Zack does take his music too seriously..i liked his stuff back in the 80's but now - its all boring.
Henry Rollins is a great guy, serious about his music but hes a fucking funny stand up comedian as well :D

I liked RATM. Even if Zack did go overboard. I'm not sure if it was that he took his music too seriously as I don't think that's really possible...but rather that he took *himself* too seriously.
I mean really what the fuck were all those "Free Mumya" or however the fuck its spelt concerts about? Freeing the guy obviously but come on...focus on your music and changing attitudes through art, not sparking a small-scale riot in midtown Manhattan.

Yea I liked them as well. Too bad they are gone. I have a feeling that without zack they are just going to sound like a metal Sanford and Son. Not that I am bashing the Sanford and Son theme, Outkast did a great cover of/with it.

No one takes himself more seriously than Stink--er, Sting. I didn't mind the music, until I found out that he's the biggest ass in show biz. Bono may think he's a god, but at least he doesn't take it out on people, like Stink does.
I attended a RATM concert once, and got to meet up with the band afterwards :) All the guys were really cool and friendly, but Zack was a real motherfucker. He wouldn't give us his autograph and acted like a grumpy superstar. And we were like..5 fans or something (maybe he's got a "minimum fans" policy..hehe). Anyway, this was 5 years ago...don't listen much to them now, though.
"Free Mumia" is also a fierce rap tune by the legendary rapper KRS-One. One of my all-time fave tunes actually, no matter genre. KRS1 is a racist..hehehe..towards white people of course, so some of his lyrics are kinda funny although they were meant to be political statements :)
If any of you think hip hop's okey, let me know if u want that tune and the in house mp3-pimp will be getting his ripping on and set yo' ass up.

I'm just waiting for him to come out of "retirement" weighing in at 400lbs. Then he can finally be the Marlon Brando of show busisness. Not to put Marlon down, because Marlon is so great, Marlon is so in touch with what it is like to be a "real" actor. Marlon is God, Marlon is the greatest thing. Marlon, Marlon, Marlon, oh can you say it enough!!! At least that is what that "guy who played the villian in Waterworld" said.

I thinks Ike Turner still take himself seriously. If you listened to him talk, you see he does not see how crazy he is.

Sting is so impressed with himself he could do himself in the butt. He's a total ass. De La Rocha is just stupid. He's been saying the same thing for 10 years. Its time to move on. And another thing, If you're on a label, you make money by the sale of your records, YOU'RE A CAPITALIST. End of story.

You shut your fuckin mouth. I take Ike VERY seriously. He was total genius. He put Tina in her place like people have forgotten how these days. Ike Turner is the shit. He's a pillar of get-down badness.

Speaking as a muscian myself i have to say of course we do. the primary reason is that our job is too pour out our thoughts/feelings/opinions for everyone to look at and pick apart for meaning. When your opinion puts the bread on the table (this is not YET the case for me) you tend to think pretty damn high of it.
Perhaps, this should have been my first choice but fuck it. The other reason is we pay these guys way the fuck too much money for doing nothing. Just like athletes. We treat them like gods, they have groupies everywhere and are above the law! That gives a man a big head i am sure.
To go back to my first point, all writers take what they put down seriously and I believe every one of them believes that they should be heard for various reasons.
If this doesn't make sense sorry, but it's like 2 in the morn and work is jsut boring the hell out of me

That's so friggin' true there, bud. Just think how fat and dirty would be without Ike there to make sure that all the lard was being worked out of her ass and stomach, etc...
Now, that doesn't mean I find her particularly attractive. Quite to the contrary. It does, however, prevent her from being 200 lbs and running around with that god awful hair and way too skimpy for a 50-year-old outfits.

Speaking as a musician myself, SUCK IT!
I've worked in different aspects of the music biz, both performance and production, and let me tell you, although you make some good points about guys getting big heads after they become big, I've met more than my share of flaming assholes from bands that were just barely making it, or not at all. I've also met guys in bands with MTV hits who were exceedingly cool. There is no justification for the big attitude. For the music you were talking about, its not fucking rocket science, nor is it curing cancer. On one of my band's cds, we had a cellist come in and lay down some stuff for us, and it was like we were speaking a different language. We were talking about choruses, progressions, etc, and then she'd just ask us: "So I rest for 20 measures here, right?" Now all the people in my band are frightfully competent musicians, and knew what she was saying and were able to convey to her what we wanted, in "proper" terminology. But I meet musicians all the time who have HUGE egos, all the while not being technicially proficient, and lacking inspiration as well. It was really humbling to hear someone for whom a fairly complex understanding of music was a given, rather than something of which to be proud. Its a lesson to us all that practice and work are just part and parcel of being a musician, and the ability to perform for people (and the joy that you get from playing with others) should be reward enough. This business is more than full enough of people doing it for the wrong reasons. Whether or not your music puts the bread on the table, it should be something you would choose to do even if you weren't getting payed.
