I actually kind of like that Alien Ant Farm cover of Michael Jackson's smooth criminal. Nice fast driving tune.

Still, I think the original is better.

Social Distortion's take on Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" is pretty awesome, although not at all wierd. The misfits "Monster Mash" is another one that's quirky. And to round out a punk triumvirate, Black Flag's "Louie, Louie" is simply inspired. Type O Negative's reworking of "Cinnamon Girl" is totally fucking awesome as well.
As for the REALLY terrible covers, Bruce Springsteen & Axl Rose doing the beatles' "Come Together" is particularly bad, metallica's garage inc stuff, and William Shatner's "Mr. Tambourine Man" Anything from Pat Boone's metal album although those are so bad one hesitates to call them covers.

What's some of the weirdest covers of songs you've heard that were still good?

I like Revolting Cocks - "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy". Cover of the Rod Stewart song of course. First of all, any band that calls themselves Revolting Cocks is pretty fucking cool to begin with. Then the guys voice in this has this evil tinge to it. It's good stuff.

Oh, and there are ping pong ball sounds effects at the end.

Check it out on Kazaa.com or your favorite communist music distribution system :)

Covers:

Queensryche's cover of "Scarborough Fair" is hauntingly beautiful. Not really weird, though.

I liked Alien Ant Farm's release of Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal." I also liked Type O Negative's cover of "Summer Breeze," which seemed kind of odd.

There were also quite a few 80s covers that I liked released a few years back-- Coal Chamber's version of "Shock The Monkey," Orgy's rendition of "Blue Monday," and Fear Factory's cover of "Cars."

I like Garth Brook's cover of "Hard Luck Woman". I'm going to cower in the corner now for I have publicly announced that I liked a song by Garth Brooks.

P's cover of Dancing Queen is particularly bizarre... For those who have never heard of them, it's Gibby Haines (sp?) from the Butthole Surfers, 2 no-names, and Johnny Depp (!) on guitar. He's actually pretty good. Much better than that wimp Keanu.

That's odd. Green Day also covered that song on their Slappy EP.
