I'm not really talking about a Rush Hour 2 type soundtrack that uses alot of actual songs. I was thinking more along the lives of the scores you hear in Gladiator, Braveheart or most any Stanley Kubrick film.
I love great movie orchestral music. Lookin' to add to my collection... let me know people!

Some that I've been into of late, not necessarily orchestral, but certainly versatile:
-English Patient &
-Talented Mr. Ripley
Anthony Minghella knows how to put a ST together, boy.
-Million Dollar Hotel
For any U2 or Milla fan, this is great stuff.

I got a great one for you if you can find it. The soundtrack to Gettysburg is absolutely incredible.

Ronin soundtrack, Hannibal soundtrack, Matrix soundtrack(both, really), Pearl Harbor soundtrack; could probably name a few more, but I'm getting over food poisoning, and do not have the energy to think. Hell, as..."bad" as this sounds, I could even point you to a few game soundtracks with musical value that surprised me. (don't judge me, dammit. :P )

The soundtrack to the film "Rushmore" is simply spectacular, as is the soundtrack to "Oh Brother, Where art Thou?" The saint and hackers both had cool techno soundtracks. All of these are mostly using actual songs though. Rushmore however has a bunch of melodic interludes penned by mark mothersbaugh that make it a particularly awesome background-music cd. I remember the last of the mohicans soundtrack being pretty good, as well as the soundtrack to the movie glory. Gettysburg is fricking awesome as well.

Oh yeah. The japanese cartoon "lupin the third" has the most exciteable soundtracks i've ever heard :) I strongly suggest everyone goes on Morpheus and grabs some. Its awsomely 70's.
Okay, I find myself wondering how many people in this thread fail to understand the difference between a Soundtrack and Musical score, as they are most certainly two different things.
James is looking for musical scores, not soundtracks.
A soundtrack is something like this. (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004XQ83/ref=m_hp_rs_1_4/002-3687516-7727233) Whereas a musical score is the background mood music. Go look up the name Hans Zimmer.
conan the barbarian.
in my humble opinion, it is the most riveting musical score (tell 'em kyle) there is.
Anvil of Crom and Wheel of Pain are great. heavy brass and lots of timpani.
also, if you like music in the classical area, i would highly recommend pink floyd Symphonic.
it is full orchestra renditions of some of floyds greatest, including Comfortably Numb.

Hey, the things I referred to are musical scores. Not my fault record labels don't know how to label their records. ;)

*sigh* I love Gladiator's fight music. They're waltzes, but they're great.

I love the Gladiator ST, my fave of the year... but it's a total ripoff, like most film scores. It's really just creative borrowing, almost like sampling. All you have to do is listen to Brahms, Mahler, and especially Holst to hear every single melody in scoring. In fact, almost half of them are in Holst's The Planets.
