View Full Version : Music. What's the best kind?
I listen to everything, depending on my mood.
I love electronic music, House especially, techno. I really like classic rock when I am driving. Some of todays rock and alternative isn't too bad either. I listent to a lot of hip hop and rap as well.
PS - I dare someone to bad-mouth 80's music.
I dare.
Without a doubt, the eighties were the LAMEST era in modern music. Other decades can boast rock'n'roll, motown, funk, metal, grunge, disco, techno as vital contributions to their era. What can the 80s give you? Bad hair, bad clothes and worse tunes.
The 80s sucked. Deal with it. http://www.rushcomics.com/ubb/wink.gif

Every decade is the worst. If you grew up in the 50s, bet you don't like 80s. If you grew up in the 70s, bet you don't like the latest music.
If you're talking about pop music, most of it sucks a lot of ass, and it doesn't sound all that appealing to someone who listened to it when it was better, which was any other time, because it seems like it just gets worse and worse, from the Beatles on...they did pretty much everything.
I think 80s music is pretty trashy, but I like it because I grew up with it. I know that it's a lot better than the comparable crap that came out in the 90s.
Also, if you want to label 80s music as pop, fine, but don't say that nothing else came out of it, because all the stuff that people listen to today is just derivative from the 50s through the 80s. Bands like the Smiths and Talking Heads were doing amazing things.
Well, I 'grew up' in the late eighties/nineties, and can honestly say I like music from almost every decade in the last five - except the eighties http://www.rushcomics.com/ubb/smile.gif
Only kidding. The eighties did have some bright moments - such as the Smiths. But they were pretty far and inbetween. The nineties had, I think, a far more diverse range of decent bands playing different music - off the top of my head, Massive Attack, Blur, Nirvana, Goldie, Tori Amos, Nine Inch Nails, Suede, Fat Boy Slim, and, of course, the Spice Girls (jokejokejokejoke!).
Maybe its just because these artists are more relevant to my formative year, but I REALLY don't get this whole 'the eighties were great' thing.

I think if they can get you to hear it enough, you'll eventually like it.
I used to hate rap, but I crumbled a year or two ago.
I like music from Led Zepellin to Ice Cube to Britney Spears.
I'm trying very to still not like country, but some of those Faith Hill and Shania songs are ok and they're damn hot so it's acceptable.
I will be the first to admit that I watch the Country Music Television network whenever they are playing videos featuring hot chicks.
I will however not admit to watching them on MUTE, with my pants around my ankles, and hand lotion and kleenex an arms length away, and anyone that tells you that about me is a liar.

I like alot of 'Top 40' but like prefer Ambient/Trance, House, R&B.
I think alot of crap is being put out lately though. What's up with no talent people who just jump around pretending they make music? Maybe swear a bit to make the kiddies think that by listening to it they'll be rebellious.

Oh yea, Sash is pretty commercial Euro/Trance so I don't know what new material you're comparing to. Sasha is another story, that man is my god.. next to Sony that is.

I had liked every genre i think,
but i stayed away from my brother's Michael Bolton .
Around 90's i really enjoyed Grunge music, pearl jam, nirvana whatever.
Late nineties i started enjoying new order from the late 80's and early 90's.
after that i got hooked onto electronic music badly b4 all these raves started hyping up. Now electronic isnt as good as it used to be. exept maybe sash, and daft .
Oh well.
Now its all rap for me..
Funny I used to hate it so much, but now I find they are the modern day philosophers, and they have the best way of expressing themselves out of ALL the eras of music ever, verbally.

I like Pearl Jam (shame on me) too.
I thought I was unique when I loved Smashing Pumpkins, as no one else I knew in high school liked them... now, everyone in my college likes it. Aie. Corgan still rocks, I think.

I stopped listening to the Pumpkins from their past 2 albums. I don't actually ever really pay attention to lyrics of any song, rather I enjoy how they accompany the music. Their recent works have done only mediocre jobs in both making the music and matching the lyrics to it.

There's also Duran Duran, Oingo Boingo, Thompson Twins, INXS, Iron Maiden, The Cure, and Poison.
Gimme some 90s stuff that you think is better.
OK.
Howsabout Nirvana, Radiohead, Blur, Massive Attack, Fatboy Slim, Suede, Tori Amos, Roni Size, Chemical Brothers, Mercury Rev, Pavement, Oasis, Supergrass, Lauren Hill, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Portishead, Stone Roses, Kate Rusby, Beth Orton and the Charlatans. All these are just off the top of my head without giving it any real thought, but given the choice I'd rather listen to any one of these in preference to any of the bands off your list. Of course, an argument over whose music taste is always productive. J
Oh, and IM(NS)HO, "Ray of Light" is Madonna's best work to date. http://www.rushcomics.com/ubb/wink.gif

I agree with MeK, both Tool and Placebo should be damned to hell.
Mike! You adorable little mormon, I almost forgot.
Nine inch nails is also brilliant. As are the Dire Straits, Pink Floyd, Paul Simon, System of a Down, Deftones, Pet, My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, and a million other bands/artists.
As for the critics, well...there's an old saying I'm sure you've all heard a thousand times and I'm sorry to bore you by repeating it;
"Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one and they all stink. Except MeK because he's always right and his ass smells like roses."

i listen to everything from Jurassic 5 to Tori Amos to BHT and the monsters, to Underworld, to 80's 1hit wonders.
Tool has been the one band that has opened my eyes (and ears) more then any other artist/band. their music is exquisite. any drumer will tell you that Carey's drum work in Aenima is arguably one of the most complex set there is. I have listened to them ever since i heard them in 93 and to this day aenima is the most frequent disc that is in my CD player.

Music is music, and it all sounds different depending on your state of mind at the time. I mean, even Yoko Ono sounds good when you just got kicked in the balls. There are very few bands out there that actually manage to develop a style that transcends mood, however, and those that do have gone on to become some of the most famous bands in history. Led Zeppelin took psychadelic rock in the 60's and 70's to new heights of glory, changing it from what you listened to when you were stoned out of your mind to what you listened to when you were on a road trip to anywhere. Pink Floyd created psychadelic rock, and are still experimenting with new ways in which to construct music. Even the Beatles, during the 60's, turned into an acid-band, and as such has influenced every single songwriter since.
But musical taste is such an abstract thing. Using a previous example, Yoko Ono is considered to be a good singer by some people.
My tastes vary. I will listen to anything from Mozart to Megadeth, from Bach to Bif Naked, and anything in between. The most I could narrow it down would be to say that anything that came out in the sixties and seventies, with the exception of Disco, which, as everybody knows, is shit, is good. Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, the Doors, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and the rest are rock and roll gods, and will live forever.
